Recent Safety Incidents

We continue to be deeply troubled by a number of safety incidents which have been reported on or near the Keele campus.

Yesterday just before 5 p.m., it was reported that an individual may have been abducted from the Keele campus. Please read this communication from Toronto Police Service.

We have been informed that earlier this week, there was an increased number of reported robberies in the Village south of the campus, as well as in the broader community.  In addition, there have been a number of reported sexual assaults, including one that occurred late yesterday afternoon near the GO Bus stop at Accolade East, where a man approached a female student and touched her inappropriately.

To respond to these ongoing community safety concerns, York Security Services continue to work closely with and to support Toronto Police Service in its investigations.   In addition to raising community awareness through last week’s Open Forum on Campus Safety, we have taken the following measures:

1.        Increased security staffing patrols, focusing on evening examination hours

2.        Additional Toronto Police Service officers are on campus

3.        Met with Toronto Police 31 division to review campus safety strategies

4.        Scheduled an Open Forum for Parents on Campus Safety (see below for details)

Should you have any information about any of these incidents please contact York Security at 416.736.5333

We appreciate that recent incidents have heightened anxiety levels across our campuses.  Students requiring counseling support are encouraged to contact Counselling & Disability Services at 416.736.5297;  staff and/or faculty can contact the York University Psychology Clinic at 416.650.8488.
